Professional Insurance UK publishes general educational information about business insurance, liability, costs, legal and contractual requirements, policy mechanics and commercial risk.
It does not provide insurance advice tailored to you or your business, recommend a particular policy or provider, act as an insurance intermediary for readers, arrange insurance, obtain quotations, make broker referrals or assess a live claim.
The main limitation
The information on this website cannot take account of every fact that may affect an individual decision. Relevant details may include your business activities, contracts, employees, clients, profession, turnover, claims history, location, risk controls and the exact wording of a policy.
Use the site to understand general principles and questions to investigate. Do not treat an article, checklist, table, example or tool as a recommendation that a particular policy, insurer, limit or course of action is suitable for you.
General information is not a personal recommendation
The FCA’s Perimeter Guidance on insurance distribution activities distinguishes general information from advice on the merits of a particular insurance contract. It also makes clear that the activity and surrounding circumstances must be considered as a whole: an activity that is not advice may still form part of another regulated activity. PIUK’s editorial boundary is designed to keep its public content general and educational, but this statement does not assert that every general-information activity is automatically outside regulation.
Professional Insurance UK therefore does not:
- recommend a named insurance policy;
- tell you that a particular contract is suitable for your circumstances;
- select an insurer or broker for you;
- complete or submit an insurance application;
- arrange a quotation, introduction or policy;
- operate a referral or lead-generation service;
- negotiate or manage a claim.
References to types of insurance are educational. Wording such as “businesses may consider” or “cover may be relevant” is not a conclusion about what you should buy.
Policies and insurers differ
Insurance policies are contracts. Their response can depend on definitions, insured activities, limits, sub-limits, excesses, exclusions, conditions, disclosure, notification requirements, territorial scope and the facts of a loss.
A description of what a type of insurance commonly covers is not a description of every policy. A page may simplify technical wording to explain a concept, but the policy documents and endorsements govern the cover actually purchased.
You should not assume that:
- a risk mentioned on this site is covered by your policy;
- two policies with the same name provide the same protection;
- a claim will be accepted;
- an insurer will pay a particular amount;
- a legal or contractual requirement is satisfied by holding any policy with a similar label.
Questions about existing cover should be checked against the current policy wording and discussed with the insurer, broker or another appropriate professional.
No insurer, broker, intermediary or referral relationship
Professional Insurance UK is an educational publication published by Zenith Star Media. It is not acting as your insurer, insurance broker, insurance intermediary, agent, introducer or claims representative.
Using the site does not create an insurer-client, broker-client, adviser-client or other professional relationship. PIUK does not receive or assess proposal forms, recommend live products or make decisions on behalf of insurers.
There are currently no quotation services, broker referrals, policy-arrangement services, quote forms or lead-generation arrangements. PIUK does not receive a referral fee for directing readers to a broker or insurer.
Legal, regulatory and professional requirements
Requirements can depend on the jurisdiction, profession, contract, employer status and facts. A source applying in England and Wales may not state the law in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Professional-body or client-contract requirements are not necessarily statutory requirements.
We aim to identify important jurisdictional limits, but a general article cannot determine your legal position. Check the current official source and obtain individual legal or professional assistance where the consequences are significant or the position is unclear.
External sources and links
We link to legislation, regulators, government bodies, standards organisations and other external sources to help readers verify important information.
External pages are controlled by their publishers and may change, move or be withdrawn. A link does not mean that Professional Insurance UK controls, endorses or guarantees everything on the external website.
Where a source has changed materially, report it through our Contact Us page or email zenithstarmediagroup@gmail.com.
Checking financial firms
The FCA Firm Checker can help consumers check whether a financial firm is authorised and has permission to provide the relevant service. The Financial Services Register provides the fuller official regulatory record, including records of firms, individuals and other bodies that are or have been authorised by the FCA or PRA.
Authorisation or registration does not by itself prove that a product is suitable for you. It does not guarantee that a complaint route, Financial Ombudsman Service protection or Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection will apply in every circumstance. Check the firm’s identity, permissions, the service being offered and the relevant protection position.
Your decisions
You remain responsible for deciding what information is relevant to your business and for obtaining appropriate assistance where needed.
Individual support may be appropriate where you are:
- deciding whether a particular policy is suitable;
- comparing live quotations or policy wordings;
- responding to a claim or circumstance;
- interpreting a contract or professional rule;
- dealing with a statutory or regulatory obligation;
- assessing a significant or unusual risk.
Depending on the issue, assistance might come from an insurance broker, insurer, solicitor, accountant, professional body or another suitably qualified person. Check the person’s status and permissions where relevant.
