Use these independent resources to organise business information, review policy documents, separate different kinds of insurance requirement and understand common terminology.
The resources are educational. They do not recommend a policy, calculate a suitable limit, confirm legal compliance or replace the wording of an insurance contract.
Start with the question you need to answer
I am reviewing existing insurance
Use the Business Insurance Review Checklist to record changes in people, activities, contracts, property, data, incidents and financial values before renewal or a mid-term review.
It helps prepare a structured conversation with an insurer, broker or other adviser. It does not decide which cover to buy.
I do not understand my policy documents
Open Understanding Business Insurance Documents for a plain-English explanation of policy wordings, schedules, endorsements, statements of fact, certificates, summaries and renewal documents.
The main lesson is to read the documents together. A certificate or summary is not usually the complete contract.
I need to know whether insurance is compulsory
Use Business Insurance Requirements in the UK to distinguish:
- statutory requirements;
- regulator or professional-body rules;
- contractual requirements;
- venue, tender, lender or landlord conditions;
- voluntary risk-management choices.
The source of the requirement matters. A statement that a policy is “required” should be checked against current law, rules or contract wording.
I need help with terminology
Use the Business Insurance Glossary for common terms such as aggregate limit, endorsement, excess, claims-made, retroactive date, run-off cover, material circumstance and statement of fact.
Definitions in an individual policy still control that policy.
I am new to business insurance
Begin with Business Insurance Explained: A UK Guide for Small Businesses. It maps business activities and risks to the principal insurance topics without prescribing a product package.
How to use a PIUK resource
- Identify the immediate question.
- Gather the documents or facts requested by the resource.
- Record uncertainties rather than guessing.
- Check current official, professional or contractual sources for requirements.
- Compare the resource with the actual policy wording.
- Escalate individual legal, regulatory or insurance questions appropriately.
A completed checklist is not evidence that a policy is suitable or that every material fact has been disclosed. It is a preparation tool.
Choose the resource by task
| Task | Best starting resource | What to bring |
|---|---|---|
| Understand the main cover categories | Business Insurance Explained | A list of activities, people, assets, contracts and key dependencies |
| Prepare for renewal or a business change | Business Insurance Review Checklist | Current documents, business changes, incidents and updated figures |
| Work out what each document does | Understanding Business Insurance Documents | Wording, schedule, endorsements, statement of fact and certificate |
| Check why insurance is described as required | Business Insurance Requirements in the UK | The exact law, rule, contract or tender clause |
| Decode an unfamiliar term | Business Insurance Glossary | The policy section and surrounding definitions |
Keep an evidence trail
For a material review, keep a dated record of:
- the documents and editions checked;
- information supplied to the insurer or intermediary;
- corrections and clarifications;
- legal, professional or contractual sources relied on;
- questions raised and written answers received;
- limits or options considered;
- the reason for the final decision;
- the next review date or business-change trigger.
This record does not guarantee cover, but it reduces the risk of relying on memory or an outdated document. Sensitive policy and claim information should be stored securely and should not be sent to PIUK’s general publishing inbox.
Resource standards
PIUK resources are designed to be:
- available as complete HTML without a required sign-up;
- written in UK English;
- usable with keyboard and assistive technology;
- clear about legal and policy limitations;
- linked to authoritative sources where material claims are made;
- reviewed on the cycle assigned in the Stage 11 authority map;
- free from provider rankings, quotations and lead-generation forms.
Optional printable versions may be added later through the separate resource and imagery workflow. The HTML page remains the authoritative version.
Important limitations
Business arrangements differ. A resource cannot determine:
- whether a person is legally an employee;
- whether a regulator’s rule applies to a particular firm;
- whether a contract has been satisfied;
- whether an incident must be notified under a policy;
- whether a claim will be accepted;
- whether a limit or excess is suitable;
- whether a policy is competitively priced.
For individual assistance, contact an appropriately authorised insurer or intermediary, and obtain legal or professional advice where the issue falls outside insurance distribution.
